Hemming Techniques

Learn different hemming techniques so you can modify and professionally finish your garments

One of the most common things I hear from new students when asked why they want to learn to sew is: "So I can hem my own pants!" This class will provide you with a wide array of hemming techniques that you can use/apply to hem your trousers, jeans, skirts, shirts, shorts, and knit garments too.

What You'll Learn

In the interest of time you will NOT be hemming actual garments, instead you will make small samples of each of these hemming techniques:

  • Double fold (2 types)
  • Zig zag
  • Blind hem
  • Rolled hem
  • Original jean hem
  • Twin needle
  • Bias bound
  • Hem tape
  • Lace hem tape
  • Serged (will be demoed with a serger)

This class is for anyone who already knows how to sew, or the confident beginner who knows how to use a sewing machine and basic sewing techniques. If you're new to sewing, check out the Intro to Sewing Course or the Quick-Project Workshops.

About the Instructor

Vanessa has a long history of teaching, and was an instructor at the Stitch Lab where she taught intro and specialty sewing classes, gave private lessons, hosted parties, and ran summer camps. In addition to sewing, she has also taught art, English and grammar to children as young as two all the way through high school-aged kids. Her teaching experience extends overseas as well when Vanessa was in the Peace Corps and she taught grades 1-12, and ran clubs and summer camps. Vanessa has taught adults and kids of all ages, and especially likes seeing how everyone applies their newfound sewing skills to express themselves.

Vanessa is also a machine service technician and likes to share helpful tips with her students on the operation and maintenance of their machines.
