Beginner Basics

Learn the basics of operating a sewing machine and essential techniques to get you sewing quickly.


Whether you've never sewn before or it's been a long time since you last touched your sewing machine, this class will provide you with what you need to jump into sewing. Sewing can be overwhelming with all of the features and moving parts, but it does not have to be.

In this class we will go over all necessary basics to make sure you are comfortable with your sewing machine. We will cover everything a beginner needs to know that will leave you confident to take the next step towards other classes. Several of the classes build on each other and can help you get more familiar with techniques and gain skills of all kinds.

We will go over aspects of your machine and its functionality and then make a drawstring bag.

Prerequisites

None! This class is for the absolute beginner or someone who wants a quick refresher.


Materials

When starting a new endeavor for the first time, even selecting basic supplies can be overwhelming, so fabric and necessary tools are provided. If you don't have a machine, no problem, one can be provided for you to use. Just select on the registration form that you need a sewing machine.

Multiple Classes
The more classes you take, the more you save. For consecutive classes taken within 60 days, the prices are:

  • Classes 1-2: Standard rate
  • Classes 3-6: 10% off standard rate
  • Classes 7+: 15% off standard rate

* Classes taken at partner locations are not applicable to be included in the bulk class discount.

Sewing machines are provided for free if you don't have your own.

All needed fabric and materials are provided for this class.




Travel Fee

Learn to sew where you want. If you want the class/lesson to take place at your location, input your address to find your travel zone and related travel fee. The travel fee is charged per trip.

About the Instructor

Vanessa has 18+ years of experience teaching adults and children. She was an instructor at the Stitch Lab where she taught intro and specialty sewing classes, gave private lessons, hosted parties, and ran summer camps. In addition to sewing, she has also taught art, English and grammar to children as young as two all the way through high school-aged kids. Vanessa has taught adults and kids of all ages, and especially likes seeing how everyone applies their newfound sewing skills to express themselves.

Vanessa is a full-time designer and seamstress, working with clients on a wide variety of custom projects and production, that helps to keep her current with the latest sewing trends and technologies. She is also a machine service technician and has expert knowledge on a wide range of sewing machines. This experience is shared with her students by showing them how to properly use and maintain their sewing machine.
