After-School Sewing Lessons

Personalized, long-term sewing programs to provide in-depth instruction for all experience levels

During the school year sewing programs are available for students to learn how to sew as they design and create different projects. The programs engage students in a fun and constructive manner, and build upon skills related to problem solving, math, and engineering, while also demonstrating new ways to express their creativity. The knowledge gained will enable students to explore an endless array of possibilities to directly apply their new sewing skills.

Sewing programs cover a wide range of projects, experience levels, and time frames so there's something for everyone. In beginner programs students will first learn how to operate a sewing machine and basic sewing techniques. For students who already know how to sew we work on refining their skills with more complex projects and opportunities to design their own projects.

The types of sewing projects include design, fashion, accessories, and decor, as well as specific techniques that can be applied to any project.

Curriculum can be coordinated with teachers, administrators, and other instructors to integrate projects and learnings from other courses.

After-school programs usually run over several days or a full semester.

Multiple programs can take place simultaneously to provide flexible options based on age ranges, skill levels, and projects. I'm also available for drop-in enrichment sessions and demonstrations during classroom hours.

To make implementation as easy as possible, we can manage all registration, scheduling, payments and automatic email/text reminders with parents.

Materials & Supplies

Projects not only utilize commercial patterns and fabrics but also include options for custom and student-designed materials that that can integrate student art, school branding, and more.

For online lessons students must have their own sewing machine and basic sewing tools as well as additional materials and supplies that may be needed for specfic projects. I will provide a list of materials needed for each project, and I also have links and recommendations to sewing machines and tools.

Programs are customized to meet the needs of students and the organization, and prices vary based on the program details.

In addition to offering sewing classes and lessons she is an instructor in the Fashion Design Program at Austin Community College. Previously, Vanessa was an instructor at The Stitch Lab where she taught intro and specialty sewing classes, gave private lessons, hosted parties, and ran summer camps. She has taught adults and kids of all ages and enjoys seeing how everyone applies their newfound sewing skills to express themselves.

Vanessa is a full-time designer and seamstress working with clients on a wide variety of custom, small-scale manufacturing and consulting projects that keep her current with the latest sewing trends and technologies. She is also a machine service technician and has expert knowledge on a wide range of sewing machines that she shares with students on how to properly use and maintain their sewing machine.

Online Lessons

With more kids learning from home online sewing lessons are a great way to keep kids active and engaged.

The online experience is different from in a classroom that some may already be familiar with but for others it could be completely new and a little intimidating. My aim is to make the experience informative, enjoyable and as easy as possible.

Watch this video to get an idea of what my online lessons are like. I make the same project with my students to guide them through every step and show details from multiple camera angles so they can see everything up close.

If you're not sure if online lessons are right for you or your child contact me to review providing you with a short demo of how it works and what you can expect before you commit.

Sewing Machines for Kids

If you're looking to buy a sewing machine for your child, these are a few I recommend.

While teaching and servicing sewing machines, I get to try out a LOT of different machines, and am frequently asked for recommendations. These recommended sewing machines for kids are simple to operate and easy to learn on. Plus, they have the one feature I always recommend for kids who are learning to sew - speed control. If you're not familiar with speed control, watch the demo below to learn more about this feature and why I suggest it for beginners.

Speed Control on Sewing Machines

Speed control is a feature found on many, but not all machines, and it maintains the speed of the sewing machine regardless of how hard you press on the foot pedal.

I teach many different students, and it's not uncommon for beginners to be intimidated by the speed of a sewing machine when they first sit down in front of one.
